Growth Dynamics and Physiological Condition of Long-billed Fish (Dermogenys orientalis) in the Pucak River, Maros

Dermogenys orientalis plays a critical ecological role in Southeast Asian freshwater systems, yet limited biological data hinder effective conservation and management. This study aimed to evaluate the length–weight relationship and condition factor of Dermogenys orientalis in the Pucak River to establish foundational insights into its growth patterns and physiological condition. Using standardized sampling methods across three stations and multiple months, individuals were measured for total length and weight, and biometric analyses were conducted following established fisheries science models. Results revealed consistent negative allometric growth across spatial and temporal scales, with b-values indicating that weight increased more slowly than length. Condition factor values remained above 1.0 across stations and months, suggesting healthy nutritional status and favorable environmental conditions. These findings align with ecological expectations for small surface-dwelling fishes and highlight both species-specific adaptations and environmental influences governing growth and condition. Collectively, the results demonstrate the resilience of Dermogenys orientalis within the Pucak River while underscoring the importance of continuous monitoring to safeguard populations exposed to pressures such as habitat alteration and ornamental fish harvesting. This study contributes meaningful baseline data to the limited body of knowledge on this species and provides guidance for conservation strategies and future ecological research.
