Obesity is an important risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus. Excess adiposity is associated with insulin resistance and impaired glucose regulation. This study aimed to determine the relationship between obesity and diabetes mellitus among adult patients at Rumah Sakit Umum Haji Makassar. This quantitative analytic study used a cross-sectional design involving 80 adult respondents selected by purposive sampling. Nutritional status was assessed using body mass index, while diabetes mellitus status was identified from fasting blood glucose records and/or a history of medical diagnosis. The association between obesity and diabetes mellitus was analyzed using the chi-square test. Among respondents with obesity, 22 (55.0%) had diabetes mellitus, whereas among respondents who were not obese, 10 (25.0%) had diabetes mellitus. The chi-square test showed a statistically significant association (χ²=7.500; df=1; p=0.006). The odds of diabetes mellitus among respondents with obesity were 3.67 times those among respondents who were not obese (OR=3.67). Because the study used a cross-sectional design, the findings indicate an association and should not be interpreted as a causal relationship. These findings support the importance of weight control and healthy lifestyle measures in diabetes prevention.
