Application of Morphometric Characterization as a Basis for Superior Broodstock Selection of Freshwater Lobster in Aquaculture Farmer Groups

Freshwater lobster (Cherax quadricarinatus) farming has considerable economic potential. However, farmers often face challenges related to declining genetic quality due to the use of broodstock that has not been properly selected. The selection of superior broodstock at the farmer-group level is generally still based on visual and subjective assessment without measurable parameters, resulting in variable and suboptimal growth rates of the offspring. This community service program aimed to implement morphometric characterization as a practical and accurate technical basis for superior broodstock selection among freshwater crayfish farmers. The activity was conducted at the Kurnia Baku Community’s Hatchery Unit (UPR), Lekopancing Village, Tanralili District, Maros Regency, involving 15 participants. The implementation methods consisted of preparation, socialization and educational activities, training on the measurement of morphometric variables, discussions and question-and-answer sessions, and evaluation. Program success was evaluated by comparing participants pre-test and post-test scores. The evaluation results showed an improvement in participants understanding after participating in the program. The mean pre-test score increased from 55.5% to 86% in the post-test, representing an improvement of 54.95%. This increase indicates that the program contributed to improving participants understanding of the importance of morphometric characterization as a basis for broodstock selection. The program is expected to enhance farmers knowledge and skills in objectively documenting and selecting high-quality broodstock candidates
